California Drought: Almonds Or Meat’s Fault?

California is in an historic drought and may even run out of water in a year. So, what’s really sucking California’s water dry: almond trees or growing food for livestock (alfalfa, hay, etc.)? Ryan shows the true culprit.

Despite Governor Brown calling on residents to cut back their water usage by 25%, that fact is that nearly 90% of California’s water is used for agriculture, with the majority of that water going towards the production of meat and dairy products. So it’s hard to imagine how growing almonds could use up more water than what’s used in making animal products.
